A little bit of CLOTTING
During the 2nd NovoSeven Argentinean Symposium held in Bariloche in 2002, Novo Nordisk Brazilian and Argentinean affiliates discussed the possibility of joining efforts to share best practice in hemophilia care. During the CLAHT Congress held in Rio de Janeiro on March 2003, two doctors from Brazil and two from Argentina met together for the first time to discuss in-depth the inhibitor treatment situation in both countries and share their experience in managing those patients. It was the birth of CLOTTING, Committee of Latin America on the therapeutics of inhibitor groups. During the same year, on September in Iguassu Falls, they had a second opportunity to meet. In that occasion their views and ideas for a future cooperation was also presented to a group of other Latin American doctors from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Peru and Venezuela. Due to the strong interest raised among doctors present, Novo Nordisk has decided to formalize CLOTTING in early 2004 as an external group of hemophilia experts devoted to widespread the state-of-art in hemophilia and inhibitors care in Latin America. Since then, CLOTTING has been supported by an unrestricted educational grant from Novo Nordisk Latin America Regional Office.
In April 2004, CLOTTING had its first formal meeting in Ushuaia, Argentina, joining nine hemophilia experts (1 from Argentina, 1 from Colombia, 1 from Peru, 1 from Uruguay, 1 from Venezuela and 2 from Brazil and Mexico). The objective of preparing a Latin American consensus and treatment guide for hemophilia patients with inhibitors was established and during this meeting inhibitor diagnosis was the topic for discussion. Various aspects of hemophilia with inhibitors treatment were then discussed in two other meetings in 2004 in Costa do Sauípe, Brazil, and during ASH in San Diego, USA. In 2005 the first hemophilia expert from Central America joined the group. Activities and discussions continued during throughout this year in meetings held in Mendoza, Argentina, Margarita Island, Venezuela, and Cancún, Mexico.
A final draft of “Diagnosis and treatment of congenital hemophilia with inhibitors: a Latin American consensus” was finished in February 2006 and was then presented by the authors in many different local congresses and symposia during 2006. The manuscript submission for publication is now ongoing.
In 2006 two other doctors from Panama and Chile joined the group who met twice, in Punta del Este, Uruguay and in Vancouver, Canada, for short meetings with the purpose to discuss future cooperative projects in Quality of Life. Due to difficulties in running such an ambitious project and the need for more hemophilia training and education in Latin America, CLOTTING has decided in 2007 to develop an educational tool for hemophilia health care professionals. This new educational concept is being prepared in modules specially written by CLOTTING members to be endorsed by local hemophilia societies and distributed all over Latin America in Spanish and Portuguese.
CLOTTING is an active group of hemophilia experts committed to improve the standards of hemophilia care in Latin America. We hope you enjoy this web page as much as we enjoy share our experience and work together to meet our objectives.
